This evening I picked up the new Rush CD "Snakes and Arrows Live". It is from the Rotterdam show last fall. I got to see them last summer in Indianapolis (Noblesville actually). I've seen Rush on every tour ever since the "Hold Your Fire" tour March of 1988. Favorite band of all time. They'll be back in Indy June 26th, but I may still be on vacation out of town at that point, so I may not go.
The last two days I've put three hours on the Octane. I've run really hard the last two weeks, putting in 108 miles. I ran really hard Wednesday and Thursday of last week. Then ran hard again on Sunday, running 10 miles under 1:06 with the last five miles just a hair under 31 minutes. So, Monday and today, I've really felt it in my sacrum area and have definite inflammation and irritation everywhere. I took a hot bath and used our massager and it feels much better right now. Gotta be careful.
Tonight, on American Idol, we got to see one of my co-workers and her husband in the audience as they watched his brother, David Cook perform. Their family is facing some very serious challenges right now, and it is great to see that it was made possible for them to be able to see David perform.
Listening to the new Rush CD Snakes and Arrows. Awesome. Rush is my all time favorite band. Friends in Jr. high got me into them with my first two "tapes", Caress Of Steel and Farewell to Kings in 1981. Been a fan ever since. Anyway, I'm also a "recent" Korn fan. Started to really get into them about 4 years ago. Not crazy about all of their albums. The album Snakes and Arrows has references to Chutes and Ladders. I guess Chutes and Ladders originated in India as a variation to the game "Snakes and Ladders". Neil Peart's essay on his website explains it all. Getting to the point. The drums on Korn's Shoots and Ladders are really cool. So, since I've been listening to my new Rush CD so much, I noticed in the song "Armor and Sword", I kept hearing something familiar. So I'm thinking, OK, it's pieces of old Rush embedded. After going round and round in my head, I finally realized what it was. Starting at the 4:11 mark of "Armor and Sword", it is the same drum rhythm as "Shoots and Ladders". I was like wow. Knick Knack Paddy Wack Give a Dog a Bone.
Been listening to Rush's new Snakes and Arrows today. Third time through. Listening to my friend from work's copy until I get my DVD version in the mail. Overall, it's growing on me. Musically, it reminds me a little of Test For Echo, but instrument wise and mix wise, it sounds very clean, guitars are separated very well and you can hear Neil's cymbals really well. Geddy's bass still sounds a little "muddy" on a couple of songs like on Vapor Trails. Lots of acoustic guitars and Neil's got some interesting sounding crash cymbals that I've never heard him play before. But, I've also been listening to Feist's new album off of her M*space (can we say that here?). Man does it sound good. I can't wait to get it when it comes in on Friday. I also found a live broadcast of her from FM4 that I really like. Not best quality sound, but intimate yet raw. I like the sound of a humming amp, kinda like Angus Young on AC/DC's live shows. And of course tonight after work, before dinner, 31 cent scoops at Baskin Robbins. Two scoops of Chocolate Mint with Hot Fudge Syrup. Wow. Today did an awesome workout on the Octane. Went the farthest I've ever gone in 60 minutes, 11.25 miles. Don't know how that would equate to running. Average HR of 156 w/ the last 30 minutes staying between 160 and 169. However, I do have some inflammation now. We'll see how it feels tomorrow. Going to try to do a couple of small 2-3 minute runs during Austin's soccer practice tomorrow. Getting some great support from my running partners as always. 9 1/2 weeks injured now. Work is hectic this week. BUT!!! We've got two candidates coming in for interviews shortly. Great news. It'll be quite an effort training a new DBA, but hopefully by the end of the summer, whoever it is can stand on their own two feet and provide me a little relief. Blake did awesome on American Idol lastnight. He could release his "Living On A Prayer" cover as a single. 3 days to the Indy Mini! Good luck to everyone. So far the weather doesn't look like it'll be too bad. Super Size Me!
