This has been a tough week running. I ran 20 miles over the weekend and then did 800m repeats on Tuesday and I am completely beat up. I managed to do 35 minutes on the Octane today. My left knee cap is really tender and a lot of irritation in my entire pelvic area. It's frustrating that I'm trying to resume training at a level that I feel I need to be at, but it's just going to take more time... This has been a rough week work wise. It's getting to be a little too much to juggle at some times. S'well. Survivor was a little disappointing tonight, I was hoping James wouldn't fall for getting voted off. But, my Office Pool guy Todd is still in it and Mariah's office pool Denise is still in. Looks like the Live Rush DVD is in the works. Hopefully, they'll release it in the spring instead of waiting for the 2008 tour to finish. And Feist is going to be on MTV Unplugged!!! HS! I hope they release that on DVD as well. I finished watching "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World" today. It's a really funny movie. The movie "Rat Race" in 2001 was kind of a remake of it.
What a creative title, eh?
OK, I'm listening to Metric as I type this. This morning, I ran another 5K. Not too bad of a time, 18:54, but it hasn't exactly been a good week with the running and got called quite a few times this week in the middle of the night. I finished 2nd overall (to a person who finished 35th in the Chicago Marathon just two weeks ago). Not too many runners in the race as a lot of them ran the Indianapolis Half Marathon and Marathon, while a couple of others were heading to Columbus OH for that race tomorrow. Developed some pain actually in my ischium area that seemed to radiate out the piriformis muscle on Wednesday morning's run. I took Thursday off and ran 1.5 miles on Friday to test things out. My legs were so fresh yesterday and today. Didn't have any pain yesterday or this morning, but on the way home from the race, started hurting. Took a hot bath and ibuprofen and that seemed to help. So, tomorrow I'm going to hit the Octane, which sucks since I made it 10 miles last Sunday. Today, Kourtney's soccer team lost 5-2. The got beat pretty bad the first half, 4-1. We had a 1-0 lead just 1:40 into the game, but it was quickly 3-1 in the first 10 minutes or so. We play the same team tomorrow at home. Heading into this game, that team had only allowed 4 goals all season. The Indianapolis Colts don't play until Monday night. They play Jacksonville, which is only 1 game behind the Colts. If the Colts win, they could have a showdown of the unbeatens with New England. New England is scoring roughly 39 points a game. Colts are scoring about 35 a game. We'll see how Indy's defense holds up. The Terre Haute boys and girls teams made it through Semi-State this morning in Bedford and will be in the state finals this coming Saturday. Looking forward to that.
Today the Indianapolis Colts won their game to go 4-0. Way to go GB Packers too. Brett Favre must have a pretty good offensive line this year. Today, Kourtney had a make up practice session for 90 minutes to make up for last Tuesday's rained out practice. After that we went to Austin's soccer game, which he scored his second goal of the season. His team won 4-1. Pretty good game. This morning I ran a pretty good 6+ miles with one of my long-time training partners. Although my legs were really beat up from yesterday, I had a ton more energy this morning than I did for yesterday's race. Later in the day, I had some pretty bad pain in my lower right leg. Icing it for 15 minutes really seemed to help. Then while watching Austin's soccer game, I had some sharp, but brief jolts of pain through my sacrum. It feels fine at the moment. I think this week, I will hit the Octane at least twice, run twice, and then run the Race For The Cure 5K on Saturday. I've only got a three day work week next week, so I'm kinda excited about that, yet, that also means that things I'm working on will require double effort. Funny how that works. S'well.
Has anyone ever noticed that some of these postings actually get posted twice? I'm not sure how it happens. Must be a bug. Anyway, another tough day at work. Lots of people stressed and freaking out. Doesn't make things very easy for me. I do a pretty good job at keeping my cool, at least toward people. I do admit, I've had some run ins with my boss that are not characteristic of me. I know at the time, he took some of it personally, which he probably should have. That was a couple of years ago, and we work pretty well together nowadays. Anyway, things have not been easy for everyone lately. Lots of incidents of downtime and problems with our software applications that we maintain. I've been able to run. I ran 6 miles Sunday, 3 on Monday and 6 on Tuesday. I haven't run or done the Octane since, since I was in so much pain on Wednesday. Sharp severe pain that wasn't at the original site of my injury. So I told myself, I'm not running or riding the Octane for 3 days, and I'm going to attempt to run the Marshall Classic 5K Saturday. It will break a streak I'm sure. That streak is that every time that I have run that race, I've either finished 2nd or 3rd. Every time! And it was always in the last half mile that I blew the lead. Damn my slow kick. So this weekend, I probably won't be in the top 3, so the streak will be over. Anyway, I hope I do well. This has been a shaky week and I need some encouragement.
Tonight, I decided to go ahead and try to run. I was so bummed out the last two days when mysteriously, my back started to hurt again. Almost as severe as the day I got my stress fracture. But, I ran about 5 miles, partly on the soft trails of Dobbs Park without incident. I love this time of year. This is the time of year, that you can walk out the door in the morning, take that deep breath of fresh, post-rain, 50+ degree air and just feel like taking off on a run. So tonight, I took a chance, and there is faint pain, but nothing like Tuesday. It's like active rehab. There's just so much "leftovers" from the original injury that really complicates things. Work still sucked today. Anymore, it's just really starting to wear me down, and it's hard to stay productive when you're losing motivation. It just gets to the point where there's just too much going on. Plus the whole not being able to train every day doesn't help either. I didn't run yesterday. On my way to Austin's soccer practice after work, I stopped by Headstone Friend's to buy some used LPs. I found so many that I wanted, but I only had $10. I had found 4 albums for $10.50 and had to scrounge for change in the car to be able to get all four of them. I got Deep Purple's "Perfect Strangers", Roger Daltrey's "Under A Raging Moon", Fleetwood Mac Double Live album from the Rumours tour, and The Who's Greatest Hits album. I managed to record Deep Purple onto CDR lastnight, but haven't finalized it yet. Sounds pretty good. Roddick couldn't get my Federer. It's totally mental. Losing 7-6 (7-5), 7-6, 6-4. Hah, my cat wants to share the keyboard. Say goodnight Alaska. Goodnight Alaska.
This is going to be a busy week for the DVR. The Track and Field World Championships in Osaka started yesterday, and already, we've got Tyson Gay claiming the gold in the 100m. I'm watching other preliminary rounds right now. The US Open Tennis Grand Slam Tournament has started as well. I didn't watch any of it today since I slept 'til 11. Wow, Alan Webb sure cut it close on his 1500m qualifier. Two Americans in the 1500m final on Wednesday. Today's run went pretty well. Legs were a little dead, yet well rested. Kinda hard to explain. But, no pain at all during the run, and afterward just the isolated tightness now. Which means progress. Just went 3.25 again today. Finished up fast with the last mile in 6:09. That last mile was just about all out. But I saw a program today about Karen Smyers (triathlete) that goes along with that same never give up attitude that I have and regardless of the setbacks, the renewed determination that never dies. So, three miles for tomorrow.
Today was a very anxious day. Although my legs are really fresh and I want to go out and run really bad, I have to restrain myself. I know, sounds funny. I ran "really" hard on Thursday and I've got a little bit of post-injury irritation today, so I've got to lay off a couple of days. Hit the Octane for the next couple of days. Work was really rough this week. People are making mistakes, off-shore miscommunications is really starting to bite us in the *ss. I'm going to get up in the morning and take pictures of the Kids Triathlon in town. It's the eleventh year, and the WVRR (Wabash Valley Road Runners) has taken it on starting this year. Kourtney is really making the most out of her summer vacation. She's with some of her girlfriends at one of the parents' summer cabins, then Sunday/Monday, she's going tubing and stuff with another of her girlfriends. So, I last saw her lastnight. Kourtney and I rented a couple of movies Cujo, Now & Then and Music & Lyrics. Off to see the Wizard...
Pretty good show tonight. You know, the Blake (?) kid kinda sounds like Paul Carrack (Squeeze, Mike + The Mechanics). I think Jordin should win it all. She's the best one that's left. Did an excellent workout on the Octane this evening. 90 minutes total w/ average HR=141. Getting pretty strong, and here it is 4 hours later and no side effects. Had quite a bit of irritation this morning for a couple of hours. Can't get over optimistic though. We'll see how I'll feel tomorrow. My quads are pretty tired. Kinda reminds me of doing hill work on the trails at Hawthorn Park. Your quads are really tired, but the legs aren't beat up from running on the roads. Today would have been an awesome day to run. 61 degrees, cloudy, pre and post rain humidity. Hmm.
Tribal Council on Survivor tonight. That was hilarious. I was laughing so hard. Went to Kourtney's track meet today. Missed her event. She threw at 4:30 but I couldn't get off of work until 5:00. Got to watch the rest of the meet though. Kinda neat watching middle school kids running track. That's when I started running, 8th grade. Neat watching kids that "don't know how" to run the mile yet. Today was not a good day from an injury standpoint. Had slight pain pretty much all day from yesterday's workout. I've got to quit pushing myself so hard sometimes. I'm supposed to be doing rehab yet I'm still finding myself trying to push myself to the limit. Will I ever learn? So now my piriformis muscle is throbbing and twitching... At least the pain is not down in my sacrum, which tells me it's most likely muscle tightness from spasms and irritation. Tonight's light workout has actually provided some relief. Work has been tough this week. Very burned out and unmotivated, and the pressure of deadlines is increasing... Austria UTF8 conversion starts tomorrow and we should be done by Sunday afternoon. Missed "The First 48" tonight when I was doing the Octane. Will have to watch it tomorrow. Doh! Can't forget 31 cent ice cream scoops at Baskin Robbins on May 2nd. I'll have to take Austin there after soccer practice and dinner.
Patience... Yesterday was not a good day from an injury standpoint. Had to take yesterday off the Octane. Had pretty nasty pain yesterday that was about the severity of two weeks post injury, so had a little scare there. I guess I can't do that intense of workouts (yet). I did do it for an hour today during lunch lightly. Seemed OK. Had a lot of inflammation and irritation for about 30 minutes afterward but it went away completely and I am completely pain free at the moment. This is really testing my patience. Boston Marathon was today. They got the storm that we had on Saturday during the soccer game. Getting pretty anxious now about running. I just have to treat it as, say, off season training. Thing that sucks is when you have days like I did yesterday, it makes you wonder how long you'll be out... On a good note, Kourtney's soccer team won again yesterday 8-1, moving to 4-0. Austin's team lost 1-0 on a goal that sort of fell out of the goalie's hands and rolled in... Looks like Deena Kastor had one of those days at Boston today. Fell apart even though they were running only 6 minute pace through 10 miles. Kinda funny though, Runner's World race day coverage had the following quote:
"We'll be back with a complete set of post-race stories, including an interview with Deena Kastor in about two years." Wow! I know she didn't have a great race, but two years? Maybe they meant two hours, eh?
Hectic day at work, but tolerable for a Monday.
